Most likely you will be arriving at Frankfurt Rhein.Main International Airport. There is an ICE train (Intercity Express train) from Frankfurt airport station (= Frankfurt (M) Flughafen Fernbf) to Braunschweig (= Braunschweig Hbf ) main railway station with only a single change at Frankfurt main railway station . It takes about 3 hours from Frankfurt to Braunschweig station.
You can purchase the ICE train ticket at Frankfurt airport on arrival. The ticket counter is located on the left hand side (called DB Service) on the bridge concourse connecting the airport terminals with the station (the station is called Fernbahnhof). From Frankfurt Fernbahnhof you will first travel to Frankfurt main station where you have to change to another ICE train.
A plan of Frankfurt Fernbahnhof can be downloaded here.
A plan of Frankfurt station can be found here.
In case you want to purchase tickets in advance via the net, please check the DB (DB = German Rail) web site here.
To search for connections:
Your starting station: Frankfurt (M) Flughafen Fernbf
Your destination: Braunschweig Hbf
Make sure that you select a direct ICE train (one change only (=Frankfurt main station = Frankfurt Hbf) , this information is listed in detail when checking the individual connection )!
The round trip ticket is about 150 Euro.
We strongly recommend reservation of seats since the ICE trains are notoriously pretty crowded.
To purchase online tickets from the DB German Rail you need to register once by giving your personal data, your email address and a valid credit card connection. The online tickets will be sent to you by email as a pdf file. Carry a well resolved printout of your ticket together (!!!) with the credit card you used to pay the ticket. When the conductors check your ticket the credit card has to be presented as an identifier.
2. and continuing by plane from Frankfurt Rhein-Main to Hannover Airport (Hannover Langenhagen)
The city of Hannover is located about 30 km (20 miles) west of Braunschweig. The Hannover Airport (Hannover Langenhagen) does not directly connect by bus or train to Braunschweig. There is, however, a train (S-Bahn, check for a white āSā on a green circle) that leaves every 30 min to Hannover main railway station (Hannover Hbf). From there you easily connect to Braunschweig main station (Braunschweig Hbf) by a regular train.
The City line ("S-Bahn") that connects Hannover airport to Hannover Hbf (Line S5) leaves every 30m min. It takes about 15 - 20 min from the airport to Hannover Hbf. The price for a single ticket is 2.70 Euro.
A time table for line S5 leaving from Hannover airport is available from the website here.
A plan of the Hannover S-Bahn net is available from the website here.
From Hannover Hbf to Braunschweig Hbf you have the choice to take either a fast IC (Intercity) train (32 min, single ticket 15.50 Euro) or a somewhat slower RE (Regio) train (46 min, 10.90 Euro). Tickets can to be purchased in the "Reisezentrum" next to the exit to the city.
